First asparagus spears of the year

1mulched asparagusAbout time too.  I usually expect to have a few token spears late March on my birthday.  But this spear has emerged only today. Two weeks later than I like.  And this is one lonely little spear in a huge long bed of potential crop.

So apart from doing a little jig up at the top potager in delight I set to improving my odds.

Water. This is a thirsty garden right now. Gorgeous weather, a bit too much wind, no rain.  So I hauled the heavy hose for the very first time all the way up to the top plot and moved aside the thick mulch.

I’ve had the aspargus under grass cuttings all winter. Here’s hoping the good soaking will bring me a lovely weekend treat.

And speaking of mulch; here is Jean Daniel’s apsargus bed all tucked up with the first mowings. Just a few metres away. 1forest sticks

I’m keen as can be to get more mulch down as soon as possible.  And walking through the forest I have found some potential candidates.  Lovely sticks and branches that could make a marvellous ground cover and weed control product.  I just have to ask permission from my neighbour first.

1foreststicks1Now that all fires are banned as of 1st January, there are sticks and branches aplenty around here that are just crying out for my chipping machine. All I need are an extra ten hours every day to get all my jobs done.
