Making use of the grass clippings

The volume is always astounding. I think I get about 15 bags of cut material from every mowing session. And it is never wasted. Last time I mulched the oak bank. Today the resource was destined for the productive part of the garden.

I never have enough soil to earth up my potatoes. So I mulch with grass instead. It keeps out the light and suppresses the weeds.

It’s pleasant work as I can see almost all the teensy fronds up above the ground and haven’t yet been devoured. There is a mole run close by the asparagus down one of the edges of the beds. Which might mean that the root munching mole rat is not far away.

Grrr.

I had enough mulch to do most of the paths near my asparagus as well. And I even ventured under the edge of the hedge above the potting shed as well. 1mulchedhedge1

These may not be scenic shots for you. But every year these hedges put on growth and take on a good plump shapes I’m very pleased. I have to keep reminding myself sometimes that this garden was not much more than bare stony terraces just a few years ago.   And these shrubs give the lovely illusion of lush.
