Digging (another) asparagus bed

1asp planted upShiny halo time. Here is Jean Daniel’s new asparagus bed. I have put in 36 crowns. canover’s colossal, pacific purple, guelph millenium.  Luckily I had done all the hard work last month; digging over the bed and removing so many stones I could have built a little wall.

I have moved all the stones to the side where they are holding down two strips of plastic to try and keep down the weeds.  And direct the rainwater onto the plants from the outsides of the bed.

The whole potager slopes gently, so I need to do a bit of rainwater harvesting.

And what I need to do is get a huge amount of mulch over this bed to prevent weeds from doing a dance all over this large expanse of ground. 1planting asp

The weather has turned cool again; just when spring looked like it was bursting into life.  So I think I have another week or so before it gets problematic.

I was surprised that Artur didn’t join me in my digging. He loves nothing more than racing up and down newly turned earth.

But after half a day of looking over my shoulder and expecting the little critter to slink into my view, I gave up.

And it was only when I went down to the stables in search of some cleats that I found his latest hiding spot.

He somehow manages to squeeze under the closed wooden door and then climb about seven feet up to a hay loft where there is a box just his size. I got quite a shock when his head popped up and he shrieked at me.

And then it was my turn to shriek as he used me as a climbing frame to get down off that platform, sharp claws and all.
