Damp but productive construction

new runner bean supportsI have decided to just ignore the weather today.  It was damp and cold but I am on a tight schedule.  So with a few extra layers including a rain proof jacket, I strode off into the forest in search of very long chestnut saplings.  And with a saw.

Silent work in the forest on Sundays around here.  So a bow saw it was.

And I found some beauties straight away.  The saw made quick work of the thinnish chestnuts, but getting them out of the forest was trickier as they were so long.

But it was well worth the effort. Having taken some advice I am now hammering 75cm stakes into the ground in position first and then placing the long saplings along the supports.  I am not nailing them in just yet. Securing them in place with twine. And next month they will get their more secure nails. straight poles

It is much faster and neater than my pathetic attempts at nailing things in and building wonky supports.

I have made four and have three to go. This will be to accommodate the wider kale and brassica areas (my cloches are too small) and to let my runner beans run along the saplings and hopefully create enough shade for the lettuce I will plant underneath.

Am I repeating myself? I’m full of plans and a bit short on excution and sleep.  It ought to come together.
