Springtime irises
Almost 10am and I am unexpectedly indoors and at my desk. Apparently there is a biblical storm coming our way (Vigilance Orange no less). So I’m going to be good and make use of the electricity and churn out some much needed blog posts while I can.
Otherwise I would be forced to sort the deep freezer, do some ironing, and reupholster two chairs.
All worthy indoor jobs.
But this is more fun.

I was thinking about irises as just about the easiest ‘win’ in the colour in the garden department.

They take up so little room. And so little maintenance. Just a once a year yank on the dead leaves and they are good to go.
And they give just a blast of colour all over the garden.
And you a really play with them. Either using them in blocks like I do as an edging ‘fence’.

Or just dotted to lift the relentless green.

Sometimes it takes a few years for some to flower once you have moved them. Or looted them from friends.

And these ones from Agnès are now so well established in the Dry Garden… but I want to move them about. They are too bitty as singles along the edge of the path. So the plan is to make them into little bulky groupings.

Clumps are fun.
And you can see just how well they bulk out and can do with a thin.
I have even been diligent by tying string around the irises that need to move.

Some because they are absurdly ‘wrong’ (I’m looking at you yellow).
And others because I would love them to bulk out. I’d love this deeper blue to multiply. Right now it’s in the wrong place hard up against some stones.

Or others because they are crowding a space.
I do want to work on that fence hedge of iris along the edge of the lawn which is thriving.
Once the deep purple small irises are over, these lovely tall pale blue ones take over.
But I only have two blocks so far. I need about eight. So cue some digging and dividing any time soon.

I just need to wait for this storm to pass.
