The very last forest venture

east forest clearedNo more trees. No more branches, logs or dead bits of greenery.  That’s the plan.

Today was gloriously sunny and calm and my wonder nephews put in a last surge of work and cleared not only the east forest, but the lower terraces as well.

And the lower terraces had Brambles.  So we battled and cursed (well, I did) and eventually had all the little nests of logs and branches that have been stock piling all over the place sorted.  Most of the huge amount of sticks, dead broom and kindling came up to the house ready for me to chip. a days work ahead

And have you ever seen such a huge pile of raw material for my chipper? It’s taller than the car and twice as wide.

a tarp full of sticksThe only way to get such a large voulme of sticks up a steep mountain slope is my not yet patented tarp method.

All you need is a lot of strength to get the load going, and someone to pick up all the bits that fall out the back.  Strapping lads to the rescue. lower terraces cleared

I don’t have room for all the forest shots I took as I was so pleased to see how clear it was. But here is the last one.

And what of the pea support I hear you bleat?

pea structureIt was the very first thing I created today. Bags of charm. Wonky as can be.  I am delighted with my first go at garden woodwork.

It was too heavy for me to lift on my own, so I am hoping it won’t blow over in the first storm.

The plan is to plant peas at the base and have them scramble up to the grid, and then flop over the edges. I have the peas ready to go – they have been hardening off for days now – but the soil is just too darn cold.

It would be cruel to put them in. So they remain in their root trainers for a week or more at least.  That ought to give me enough time to build the other one I made.
