Moving grasses

eragrostis upThe eragrostis are on the move.   The grown from seed little grasses that I plonked into the calabert garden last year have turned into monsters. I am so proud of this project.

Nothing beats successfully growing things from seed.   They went into this rich part of the soil as I wanted to bulk them out.   And they were so happy that they crowded out the shrubs.   And they were always so regimented in their neat rows.   But I have learned that big ornamental grasses only move best when they are into growth in the spring. So I had to wait.

I kept a dozen or so in situ, moved a few back to the wall so they wouldn’t look too neat, and then had a dozen more to play with. eragrostis on path

I had first thought to move the big ones down to the pool garden terrace.   But I didn’t get that far. In keeping with the plan to turn the narrow terraces more horizontal, I just planted groups of three of the grasses either side of the path up to the shed.

So hopefully your eye will be drawn to the grasses in the distance and get a sense of width.

thyme for terraceI added more to the area around the shade garden, and saved two large juicy ones for the big pots that I keep in the courtyard. Drought tolerant grasses; lets see how they cope.

And then I moved the thyme plants down to where I want to plant them tomorrow.   This blank canvas of the plum garden terrrace is about to be dotted with green.
