A very small victory

You may think that the sight of a squillion roses on a bush in the courtyard would be the most exciting rose event in the garden.   But no.

Tucked away down in among the wildflower bed lies the biggest miracle of all. I have had a success with rose cuttings.   Late last year I stuck some sticks in the ground and hoped for the best.

And here is one of those sticks flowering. I am so thrilled!  My first exclamation mark in months, but it just goes to show that dumb luck works. It was obviously the right combination of well drained soil, slightly moist, protected, all the necessary ingredients to get a rose to turn into a rose.

It never ceases to amaze me that cuttings work.   I have to leave it alone for the rest of this year and then I can uproot it this winter and pot it up. I have learned my lesson about the roses in the courtyard: they can’t go directly into the ground.   Planters are the solution.
