Springtime blossom

1apple blossomMy instinct is to wander around the farm snapping shots of flowers in bloom.  But the real work that is going on at the moment is much more mundane. And less photogenic. Springtime weeding.

I waded into the area behind the soft fruit orchard yesterday and honestly wondered if I would ever make it back out.

And the compost heap was teetering. I’ve filled the one near the potager. The temporary one above the septic tank has reached so tall it’s unsightly levels.

And I’m now piling weeds behind the largest white currant bush in the hope it’s not the first thing you see when you waft down the steps towards the orchard.

But if you have to weed then this is the most satisfying time of year.  The clumps come out with such stunning ease.1weededpotagerpath

I worked my way round the perimeter of the potager – a sitting down job.  And it may look dull, but the bark path on the far edge of the vegetable garden no longer resembles a jungle. And that is even more satisfying than apple blossom.

Almost.

And Artur was having his own spring moment. He is hunting.

1artur hunting moleYou have to step around him on the path in the barn garden as he has his eyes on a mole hill. And for nothing else.

I won’t know if he is successful as he rarely brings me his treasures. Just one mole was brought into the house with great glee and almost crunched up on the carpet under the dining table last month.

Generally he dispatches any quarry with great speed and a flourish which reminds you that he is truly a wild beast. When he’s not sleeping.
