Overwintering greens

winter gardenLast year I managed to get a fantastic crop of spicy greens up and going before the cold set in. And had fantastic leaves for salads and sandwiches all winter, albeit on a small scale.

I thought I would be able to repeat the performance this year, but visits from the damn cabbage moth butterflies from September put paid to that.  Grubs everywhere.  I did get about three lavish cabbage meals from the crop, but there’ll be nowt for winter.

I’ll have to rethink how I protect them next year. Under nets I guess.

I do however have some crops in the potting shed.  I spent a happy day earlier this week having a good tidy and sort. eragrostis to overwinter

The eucalyptus trees you can see in the foreground will have to come into my office until March. So too the handsome spears of my kangaroo paws.  But the rest can fight it out with the minus temperatures.

The eragrostis will either go into the cold frame – when I fix the lid – or just sit here on the bench and look fetching. I’m a grass grower it seems.
