Creating paths and removing stones

1violet fieldWhat a treat on the lower terraces. We seem to have a violet explosion this year. That’s what I love about this farm. You never know just what is going to pop up.  I wonder if it is because the wild boar churned up so much of this grass last autumn.

But the whole terrace is carpeted with beautiful delicate little flowers.

There is no scent alas, but it makes a lovely almost spring treat. And it meant I had to watch where I stepped when I walked down the long flat lawns.

My aim today was to try and make mowing a bit easier this year.  And that means I hae to find a way – well, create a way – to get the lawn mower down to the second terrace below the road.

1stone lifting 1The first one is easy as I have easy access from the road.  But little terrace two needs a lot of work.

First up there is a boulder field in the middle of the lumpy grass.  I need help levering a lot of them out.  But I was able to get my trusty Bulldog fork under some of the lesser rocks and get them out of the ground.

I have left them in situ as I almost did my back trying to stagger over to the edge of the terrace with a few of the choice ones.  I tell you, I could murder a mini digger. So much of these terraces need levelling to make my life easier.12nd terrace path

But for now I have created two paths that might make it a bit easier to get the mower down.

They might be too steep. I should have gone and powered up the mower and done a test teeter down the slope, but I didn’t think of that. I was too busy with my head down working away at rocks and weeds.

22nd terrace 1The weather was cool and misty today. But luckily it didn’t rain; just sprinkles and droplets and I only dragged myself indoors when it became too dark to see what was stone and what was mole hill and what was lawn.
